The government on Wednesday directed commodity exchanges to divest foreign equity exceeding the permitted ceiling of 49 per cent by June 30, 2009.According to guidelines for foreign investment in commodity exchanges, a composite ceiling of 49 per cent was allowed, comprising 23 per cent under Portfolio Investment Scheme and 26 per cent under FDI Scheme.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Wednesday recommended that National and International Long Distance operators be permitted to offer STD and ISD voice calls using operator-specific calling cards, a move that will give subscribers the freedom to choose a service provider.In its recommendations to the government, Trai said the provision of calling cards would allow consumer to exercise choice of long distance operator for the national and international calls.

Most car buyers, when applying for a loan, grapple with the question of whether they should opt for a fixed or a floating rate option.This question assumes importance as car loans have a lower tenure than home loans. Typically, home loans have a 15-20 year tenures, during which the borrower will go through a few rate cycles. If the interest rates rise in the interim, their equated monthly instalments are likely to shoot up.Car loans, on an average, are for three to four years (maximum tenure: 7 years). That means that a person mostly would find it difficult to gauge that whether they are entering a rising or a falling cycle.
